"Why don't you go get him,
I'm his biggest fan
You gotta tell him,
He's still the man"
- Calling Elvis by Dire Straits, 1991
Not for the first time Mark Knopfler reads my mind. Shane Bond's debut for Hampshire against Sussex (which almost didn't happen because the BCCI wanted to drive home its stranglehold over the English Board regarding ICL players in county cricket) yielded 7 for 66.
Who's to blame? The BCCI or NZC? Not Bond himself, surely. He remained committed to his contract and didn't get the backing of his national board when he needed it.
Look at what you're missing.

Why is everyone so quick to exonerate Shane Bond? He chose to play in the ICL over international cricket.
You could claim that the NZC is partially culpable for not breaking the ICC regulation that forbade them releasing players for unsanctioned tournaments. You could blame the ICC for enforcing the regulation and you could blame the BCCI for ensuring the regulation would be enforced. You could even blame the ICL for not releasing Bond when it became clear his international career was at risk. But none of that changes the fact that central to the whole issue is that Shane Bond signed with the ICL.
