I've been a bit busy of late and just haven't found the time to post my views about the million-or-so parallel threads which have been running in the cricketing world over the last week. I'll probably be working extra hours for the remainder of the week so it's 50-50 whether I'll be able to catch Friday's NZ-Sri Lanka game(the World T20 opener) in its entirety.
The major talking point from yesterday is Zimbabwe's defeat of Australia in the warm up game. Now this isn't exactly an unprecedented event (if one cares to cast one's mind back to a group game from 2007), but it still raises more than a few eyebrows.
Wes has blogged about the game and suggests that Michael Clarke's side has a lot to think about. Certainly Australia's all-out pace attack can be expensive at times but their support bowlers - Watson and Christian were the ones on whim maximum damage was inflicted, which was the damning bit.
I would argue it's just what the Aussies needed. No compacency from them hereon, which will only make them doubly dangerous. The result is also a message to New Zealand and Sri Lanka that there's a potential banana skin lurking in their group. The loser of Friday's game will not be entirely comfortable with the prospect of having to beat the pesky Zimbabweans to make it to the next round.
Late bloomers such as Chigumbura and Brendan Taylor aside, Zimbabwe's slow bowling attack is their obvious calling card. Given their recent experience of playing in the West Indies - even humbling the hosts on a couple of occasions - they'll be backing themselves. And given that the majority of NZ's big hitters like a bit of pace on the ball, as a kiwi supporter I should be a bit worried.
Watch out for Group B!

Hi Suhas thanks for the mention,
I think Dan Christian's inclusion in the team, as much as I glorify the Redbacks, was maybe not well thought about. But it is a delicate matter.
The robot Price and Utseya can be frustrating to face on slow wickets. Zimb also have Cremer, Lamb and Maruma. Mazakadza too can bowl a bit of dibbly dobblers. In short they have plenty of slow bowlers.
Chigumbura and Bilignaut coming down the order can be dangerous. Taylor and Mazakadza are decent batsmen but their top order can collapse under pressure
For Australia Clarke has to score quicker.
Anyway please have a look at my previews.
Cheers
@Wes: I suppose it's a bit early to be judging Christian, but how's his batting? Quite a few Aussies I can recall, like Shane Lee, James Hopes, Watson and Cameron White probably couldn't make the side on their bowling alone, but developed their batting well enough.
Speaking of the redbacks, how come Callum Ferguson doesn't seem to be on the selectors' radar at the moment?
@Greyblazer: I've seen a fair bit of Price and Utseya, and I vaguely recall Cremer. Not too clued in on Lamb or Maruma but together they sound like the second coming of NZ's dibly-dobblies of the 92 World Cup! Glad to see Blignaut back in the side, though. Capable matchwinner whose potential was wasted..worthy of an IPL contract certainly.
Hi Suhas, Jrod thinks DC is a mad version of James Hopes... I think Jrod is a mad version of Jrod! He is a great allrounder for the Redbacks but couldn't fire yet in the national side. Of course I wish him to start the turbo now.
Fergie is unfortunately still recovering from the surgery he had to undergo after his severe injury in the ODI World Cup. I hope and pray he will be back soon.
Speaking of Redbacks... those were the times:
